I have never met these people before and am trying to form a business relationship for future sales. I have heard that they like regional items but not sure what from Orange County or CA they would like that is easy to travel with meaningful and not junk. I need to buy about 20 gifts half in about the $10-$15 range and half in the $25-50 range

Choose perishable/edible gifts. In general, don't buy things such ornaments, vases, and kitchenware; it's already assumed that everyone has these things. To do so may imply that you don't approve of the other person's taste. Also, most Japanese houses are very small and don't have extra space for useless junk.

Offer something perishable or edible. Some suggestions include fruits, smoked salmon, canned goods, coffee/teas, jars of jam, and oils. Though not as common, fine wine or gourmet bottled drinks are options as well.

Wrap all gifts attractively. Wrap anything and everything with good-quality paper along with bows and ribbons. Japanese gift-giving is an art and it should be treated as such.

Gift-giving is highly ritualistic and meaningful.

The ceremony of presenting the gift and the way it is wrapped is as important--sometimes more important--than the gift itself.

Gifts are given for many occasions.

The gift need not be expensive, but take great care to ask someone who understands the culture to help you decide what type of gift to give.

Good quality chocolates or small cakes are good ideas.

Do not give lilies, camellias or lotus blossoms as they are associated with funerals.

Do not give white flowers of any kind as they are associated with funerals.

Do not give potted plants as they encourage sickness, although a bonsai tree is always acceptable.

Give items in odd numbers, but not 9.

If you buy the gift in Japan, have it wrapped.

Pastel colours are the best choices for wrapping paper.

Gifts are not opened when received.

Well, when I went to Japan for a homestay, since I'm from NY, I bought each member of the family a NY Yankees t-shirt. Each was like $13. They seemed to really like them. Bringing memorabilia from a baseball team can work well, since they play it over there, and some of their players end up in the states. I'm not sure which California team is closest to you, or if your a fan of the sport in the first place, but it's the only idea I could think of.

I hope this helps.

the Japanese are rabid baseball fans. they also like American whiskey/bourbon. Another thing is fine chocolates or gourmet foods, so much the better if you get a local specialty.
