73 degrees Fahrenheit is the scientifically proven preferred human temperature.
I agree, give or take a few degrees.

I live in the Houston area and it is quite humid here. During the day when no one is home I turn the thermostat to 80. No one is at the house for 9 hours and as a single mother with 3 I do my best to keep my bill low. During the evening when we are all there it stays at 74. My bills for the summer have been averaging about $250.00. Not too bad I think for a 1300sq. ft. home.

Wow, I keep mine set at 68, but at night i turn it down to 65. 72 - 74 sounds warm to me. Save the environment and money, keep it low and have extra blankets or sweaters available for guests. Growing up my mom always told me to put another layer on, much more cost efficient.

In the summer time, you can set it a little higher; maybe around 74-76. You can do that because it's hot outside, and it feels cooler inside than it really is.
Also, some thermosdats will read a higher or lower temerature than there really is, depending on where in the building it's located. (near a vent, or away)

75 summer, 68 winter. and we turn it down to 62 at night in winter, and off when we leave the house in summer (for more than 30 minutes away from the house)
if we get too cold in winter, we put on more clothes and maybe a knit hat. in summer if it gets really muggy, we just turn on fans.
