We are social creatures...we are forced to live in groups to survive...it's our nature. We have to be 'accepted' by our peers in order to survive and to grow..... really.
So it comes down to- we care what others think because they ultimately enable us to expand our mind -feelings- thinking.
oh yes you wanted inspiration...Emily Dickinson...
IF I can stop one heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain;
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin
Unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain

If anyone says that they have never cared about what people think then they are lying to you even if they don't know it. You can go your whole life saying that your going to do something and you don't care what anybody else thinks. But there comes a time or there is going to come a time when you will. You can try to block it out all you want. Now, you don't have to be obsessed with what people think but theres always something in the back of your mind that cares. Hope that this helps if only a little.

You must find the confidence in yourself. You must believe that who and what you are is good enough. The only person you need to prove this to is yourself. Once you've done that, you can live a much happier life.
Everyone has been judgemental at one point in their lives. The thing to remember, is that if you are doing the best that you can do, are honest and forthright, then there will be nothing for others to think badly of you.
Even if they still do, you'll know that they are the ones with the problem, not you. Most likely they are jealous, envious, or just plain mean spirited and want to try and make others lives as miserable as theirs(misery loves company).
You won't be able to overcome this overnight, but just put your best foot forward everyday.

I have a hard time not caring what other people think too, but here is the conclusion I came to after a while.
Are people listening to what you are thinking when they do their deeds? Do you really have anyway of knowing what other people are sincerely thinking and not being hypocritical themselves? Its just not feasible to satisfy all other people that you don't care about.
Logically why it is wrong to care what people talk about.
1. You don't know what people are actually thinking. People are hypocritical, lying, self-absorbed, and self-serving. You can't tell what is really going on in those heads.
2. It is not a two-way process. They are not oblgated to follow and few are even influenced by your opinion so why should you be.
3. Who are these other people really? Why are they important to you and why should you listen to them? These people are nothing to you so why care.
4. Everybody's ideal opinion will be different, unique, and constantly changing. People have opinions different as night and day, and their opinions change like the seasons. It is impossible to satisfy them all. Would you really be happy living your life based on someone else.
I think about it logically. I have come to my own ideals.
Live life well. Live life to make yourself and your loved ones happy. Live life without regret. In your mind, people are thinking what you want them to be thinking. If people voice their real opinions, their words fall on deaf ears.

Though it is important to care about what others think, your own thoughts are more important. If they're not appropriate, then find things that are, and think on those. I spent several years not caring, or feeling like I didn't, even about myself, although it seemed what others thought about me did matter. I'd get really depressed if I just thought anyone was mad or upset with me, or even just dissappointed in me. Although sometimes I still feel that way, I've had to have therapy and medication for depression.
Not caring is one of the signs/syptoms of depression, which should be treated as soon as possible.
If you care about others, you're doing good.

I think that you have to develop an attitude of I dont give a fcuk!!! The trick that you play on yourself when you care/worry about what others think of you is that unless you're physic you really dont know what others are thinking of you. Its really YOU thinking negative thoughts about yourself and you're fooling yourself by thinking that these thoughts are the thoughts that people are thinking of you. Understand? Read that again.
Lets say you do something spontanious, crazy and weird. You may afterwards feel embarrassed about it and you may think that people a judging you. But what if they were secretly admiring you but never told you this.
You have to love everything about yourself and be totally self absorbed in you to that point that you're in such a bliss that you dont have time to think about what others MIGHT be thinking of you. Chances are they're not or they're entertained anyway. If they do have anything negative to say, consider the fact that they might just be haters and critics. Who gives a fcuk about those miserable people anyway.
As children we naturally love ourselves. We are taught through society that its bad to be self absorbed. But truth is we come in this world alone and die alone. The only thing that is wrong is being selfish with your love to yourself and to others.

Caring for others is the property of a fine and refined soul, and we call it as culture. perhaps your point is different, you might be asking about not caring, or bothering what others think and do.
The point is, does what others think affect you? It ought not affect you. When it does not affect you, the others get defeated ih their intention of speaking against you. if the opinion of others must not affect you, the you should not bother them. think, that elephent will walk as though nothing is happening, while dogs keep barking..........
It is only a matter of training your mind.

To care what people think isn't that important...but to have that thought...Is! If you try to be what everyone wants you to be then nobody is being you.
Me and you are friends...
If you fight...I fight
If you hurt...I hurt
If you cry...I cry
If you jump off a bridge...
I'm gonna miss your dumb ***
