make a list of the topics you are interested in and then google top 5 writers in that genre and start there - you are bound to get some good ones and some clunkers. google "top 5 authors"+horror, or sci-fi, or romance, or adventure - you get the drift. you can go to www.classicbookshelf.com and pick from that list of classic books or http://www.bestsellersdirect.ca/catalog/cat448_1.htm and you can see a list of books that you can buy or get an idea of what you want to read, or as someone else said, just go to the library
I read any genre also and my top five authors are:
Diana Gabaldon
Stephen King
Janet Evanovitch
Sue Grafton
Anne Rice
- too many to list and too many to choose from
good luck and good reading

Some of these are from female perspectives, some may be a little "girly girl" for your liking but others should be okay. I've left both genre on and you can decide. Meryll of the Stone (Brian Caswell) Picnic at Hanging Rock (Joan Lindsay) Stranger with my face (Lois Duncan) Playing Beattie Bow (Ruth Parks) My Sister Sif (Ruth Parks) Hitch hikers guide to the Galaxy (Douglas Adams) Holes (Louis Sachar) Lord of the Rings / The Hobbit Eragorn trilogy Narnia The Golden Compass Interview with a Vampire (Anne Rice) Requiem for a Princess (Ruth M Arthur) Looking for Alibrandi (Melina Marchetta) Angels Gate (Gary Crew) Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants Pelican's Creek (Maureen Pople) The Diary of Anne Frank To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee) The Shiralee (Dárcy Niland) Into the Wild (John Krakauer) Chocolat (Joanne Harris) Harp in the South; Poor Man's Orange; Missus (Trilogy by Ruth Parks) Where the Heart is (Billie Letts) My Place (Sally Morgan) Little Women (Louisa May Alcott) Rebecca (Daphne De Maurier) The 3 Muskateers (Alexandre Dumas) Anything by the Bronte sisters or Jane Austen Whatever you do don’t run The December Boys (Robert Noonan)

I have several books I like to read again every few years:

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. Set in New Orleans, probably one of the wierdest and funniest books ever written.

No Man Knows My History: The Life of Joseph Smith by Fawn M. Brodie. Still the best biography of the controversial founder of Mormonism.

Tao: The Watercourse Way by Alan Watts and Al Chung-liang Huang. Brings life, the universe & everything into perfect view.

That's a difficult question because what you consider a 'good book' may be different for others, I would say finding a good book is part of the adventure in itself. It is a way of defining what you consider good books as well.

Just walk into a library, put a blind fold on, spin around a couple of times with your finger pointed and start reading wherever you stop.
