an Automobile will idle for 10 mins. on the same gas that it takes to start it up.
also when a car is turned off, the oil drains back into the crankcase, and you need to let it idle for a while to get everything circulating again.
not to mention the wear and tear on the starter, however it will no affect the battery very much, unless you are turning it off and on often.
it does take more than a few minute for the alternator to recharge the battery.

however leaving a car running, unattended can lead to a lost car.

If the grid goes down, I turn on the engine and connect a Radio Shack 350W inverter to the battery so I can keep using the computer or TV. I'll keep the engine running for 2 to 3 hours.
Expensive yes, but I've got to have that Yahoo! Answers. I forget but I think the inverter cost around 50 or 75 dollars. Very very easy to connect. A child can do it.

If it is just a minute of two just leave it running. This applies to everything from cars to electronics.

The hardest part on your car, computer, stereo, whatever is the start up. The start is harsh and taxing on any system. Starter must engage, engine turn and is dry, fluids need to start getting to components, and the battery is making all this work.
once running everything is running as planned and smooth. oil is pumping fans are going diodes are dioding etc.

For you computer or TV if you turn it on and off alot it will wear and brake faster. My PC is on 24/7 unless I am rebooting. It has been on for 2 years.

The monitor i shut off at night just because it is big and burns alot of energy.

It is always better to shut it off. Keeping it running it idle cause excess carbon build up from slow crankshaft movement and excessive heat that would normally be realeased from moving. We see it with police cars all the time. NYPD uses hour meters on their cars because if you went by mileage alone the oil change would never happen. Excess idle time is a huge issue for fleets in major cities. Better to shut it down when you can .The enviornment will thank you as well.

If your stopped in traffic for longer than 2 minutes and won't get going again for another 5 minutes at least, then I would shut the engine down as long as I didn't need to keep the lights or wipers on in which case I'd keep idling the engine.

every man i've ever known says to leave the car running instead of turning it off and turning it back on within a few minutes. they say it not only is more fuel efficient, it does save on wear and tear.

The worst thing about restarting is the starter wear. If this is something you do constantly, like hopping in and out to deliver newspapers or something like that, you will kill the starter. If you're talking about heading into the convenience store, it won't make enough of a difference to matter.

For a few minutes, I'd just keep it running! In the winter time, I run out to start my truck up and let it run for a few minutes so it gets warm!
