I went into a large research group led by one of the fields best-known individuals, learned a ton, met dozens of other people in the field (we would have invited visitors at least once a month), got my PhD and, perhaps most importantly, met my future wife. All because I was well-advised to go into a program based on who I would be learning under, rather than pick the program at the school with the most prestigious name.
