Certain medications, diabetes, heart disease, emotional troubles, injury and many other things can cause impotence. Cycling can cause injury I think and can also cause testicular cancer.

the seat of many bikes can cause serious nerve damage to the erection nerves...they now have seats that have a slot in them so that the "root" between your legs has NO pressure on it..it is long terms of high pressure that cause serious damage and cause ED in cycling...this is a very real deal here. IF you ride for more than hour or so a day, you are in danger of ED if you do not take precautions to relieve the pressure from the normal seat. The damage occurs over a long period of time, getting worse and worse, is irreversable, so the best cure is to not let it happen...THis has nothing to do with the clothing, it is pressure from those ridiculous seats. Once damaged, you are going to have to rely on Viagra or stronger meds to get the deed done. Don't take a chance, purchase a seat that is designed to prevent this damage. Yes, what you have heard is very true! Goldwing

Hmm..just commenting on the person above me. If you were "crushing arterties" one would think that this would actually lead TO an erection. Because, what causes erection is increased blood flow IN and decreased blood flow OUT of the penis. The penis is made of soft tissue that, when it receives increased blood flow, the venous blood flows into the penis, swelling the tissue and kind of "cramping" the arterial blood flowing out of the penis. This is what causes an erection. Usually anything that would "crush" or "cramp" any veins or arteries would lead TO an erection, not the reverse. (much like putting a rubber band around your finger)
Causes of impotence usually stem from a pituitary or hormonal disorder like hypogonadism (loss of testosterone), or sometimes a problem with the circulatory system, or problems with circulation like reduced blood flow, blood clots, problems with blood flow returning to the heart, heart disease, stroke, ect.
The way certain E.D. drugs like viagra work is by increasing the blood flow to the penis, by relaxing the muscles, thus "unswelling" the tissue so that blood can flow into the penis and make it erect.
It sounds contradictory, but actually when the tissues and muscles are "tense" or "flexed" the penis is flacid. When the muscles and tissues are relaxed is what causes an erection.

Hell yes! I am a man, but untypical to my gender I will admit it.
After longer rides 60 miles or more, after a shower and hoping into bed ( not alone) on a scale of 1 to 10 I would say I was about a 6 or 7 referring to erect status. I switched to a "Terry" seat with the cut out and have no problem at all now. I would never go back to a regular seat. No numbness at all. There is scientific evidence of how the seat and your sitbones can crush the artery's that supply blood to that region, I'm sure you can find it on the web if you wish.

Not cycling, but the cycling shorts - the boys can't breathe.
Another cause is the foam in car seats, if the upholstery is torn up or gone.

Nerve and artery damage can be caused by cycling too hard, rodeo riding, or prolonged use of a rowing machine, resulting in the inability to get an erection. Often, minimising the use of hard bicycle seats and exercise machine seats will help restore sexual function.
