It really depends on your location and what similar jobs in your area pay. Our administrative assistant makes about $16 per hour, but up north closer to Chicago the same job pays $21 per hour. So depending on your location $15 seems like a reasonable amount. When you meet with the boss, ask if there is a set amount the position pays. Many companies have set amounts, but they may pay more based on education and experience.

Always answer salary questions with a range. Pick a middle number, and go a couple percentage points up and down both ways. I'd say, go with 15, but when asked, say 14-17.

I suggest working here for a few years, and see if you can't find a better job. Administrative work in larger companies should easily get into the 20s.

Give that a try.

Put it this way, the employer is looking at two things, if you can work better than the fired lady and if it will be cost effective for him.

So if you ask for her entire salary to be transfered to you then he might as well hire someone else. But if you come up with a reasonable offer and sound confident that you can do both jobs and well (fake it till you make it) then your boss will be interested.

I really recommend that you come with a number in your head BUT make him say the offer first, since it can be higher than what you are thinking. So tell him you are not sure and what does he think since blah blah... then if he is lower than what you want just say, I was thinking that $XX would be more fair etc...

A tip for you.

When asked, if they do, what you expect to make, simply respond that you only wish to be remunerated if a way that is beneficial to both the company and you.

Never tell them what you want. Let them open with what they want to pay. It could well be above what you were going to ask.

If they come in low, then you have the option to ask for more.
Either way you can't lose.

If you have only been there for about 3 months and will still be doing administrative work, then I would not ask for 15/hr.

If you are getting a promotion then I doubt you get to pick your pay. More than likely they already have a set amount for you. I would say that $15.00-17.00 would be a good offer from them.

If you are doing the same type of work, but more of it. I would expect that your raise would be about 10%.
