I visited in September and early October, before the start of the rain season. The weather was pleasant and there were not too many visitors. Lots of fog and cloud and some rain, but that's a given for the NW.
I forgot to mention...most of the largest, best groves of redwood are up in the area near Eureka, CA. One good choice might be Humboldt Redwoods State Park, which has the Rockefeller Forest, the largest single redwood grove left, as well as the Avenue of the Giants scenic highway. There are 3 short trails showing highlights and one 8-mile loop that is almost entirely thru old growth. Prairie Creek Redwoods to the north is another good choice, it has excellent redwoods, plus coastline, elk herds, and Fern Canyon which is very beautiful.
On the other hand if you dont want to go so far north, there is the small Muir Woods near Frisco, and Big Bend state park to the south.
Note that I'm referring to coastal redwoods. If you want giant sequoia, which are shorter but wider, the national park of the same name is a good bet.

Richardson's Grove @ Gurneyville Hwy 1 or Hwy 101 in the north part of the state..Best time to visit weather wise would be spring, summer or fall.{ no rain} even winter is not bad, maybe a little wetter and cooler..wear layered clothes. Kings Canyon Nat Park near Fresno also puts on a great show of trees..The town of Arnold in the Gold Country has big Redwoods also.

The best place, and the location of the legendary redwood trees, is Richardson's Grove in Northern CA. The best weather on the north coast is actually in the fall. But from May through October is probably fine.

Fall, before the rain starts, late spring, and summer.
Anywhere in Humboldt County has redwoods. If you travel up US 101, there are several marked side roads which will take you through old growth tracts, the most impressive of which is the Ladybird Johnson grove.
Be prepared ALWAYS for cold, rainy, and foggy weather; the only predictable weather is the rain and fog of the winter. I like summer because it stays light later and you can see more in a day.

Just continue to water the trees and wait and see. It is likely the redwoods will come back ok. Water the whole yard not just around the base of the trees.
