I waited tables for years as a server and good things happened to me - I married the brewer at the brewery I worked at and now I have beer on tap at my house. :)

You've taken this saying out of context. There is no telling exactly what it means, but here is my opinion.

People who go out and look desperately for love generally end up with someone they aren't compatable with. But if someone waits, and enjoys being single, then usually, in time, the right person for them manages to wander into their lives on their own.

Or... Let's say you're working, and you hate your job! So, if you quit you have to find a new job and start from scratch, but if you wait, and do your job to the best of your abilities, you're more likely to get a better one on down the road.

Or... You're saving up for something (let's say an Ipod), and you have enough for one that isn't that great. But, you want it so bad, you buy it anyways. If you had waited and saved more, you could have gotten a better one, or even possibly the best one.

Alot of teenage girls think it'll be fun to get married and start a family (girls are googoo over babies), and so alot of them find a mate they find acceptable at the time, get pregnant, and have a hard life, and a hard time with their relationship, raising a child, making money, paying bills.... If they had waited until they were truly ready, however...

Alot of things are worth waiting for. But waiting isn't fun, so alot of people go for what they can get here and now.

I think you've got the relationship backwards. Most Unemployed, poor, demoralized actors are waiters.

And it's this way because patience alone can't help you. Talent, hard work, and passion are also very important. It's said that good things come to those who wait, but it's also said that God helps those who help themselves. So...do something while you're waiting.
