I want something a bit more romantic and quiet. A good day out for strolling along an Autumn beach hand in hand. That sort of thing.

We'll be driving.

If you want a quiet beach I would suggest east mersea on Mersea Island near Colchester. You drive over the causeway onto the island drive until the road forks. Take the East Mersea Road and follow until you seee signs for the beach turning iff to the left. There is a car park by the beach.
The beach is never busy and unspoiled , just caravan parks and a few beach huts , You can have a bbq on the beach without bothering anyone. Beach is sand.

My favourite is Hastings. the town is a bit run down but has some very interesting old streets with half timbered buildings, antique shops, book shops, and if you are interested in jewellery and minerals there's a great shop in the old town called Stone Corner. If you go don't miss All Saints Street, one of the prettiest in the UK. Hastings has a pebble beach and the fishing boats are hauled up every day (luggers) so you can get excellent fish and chips in the restaurants facing the sea. There are caves in the West Hill and a lift up the East Hill leading to a long country park extending for miles along the coastline. Have a nice day! James

Margate is lovely... No piers but a beautiful sandy beachy and a lovely small town... When I last came (I have been many times) the sea was the same colour as the sky, it was truly blue! Wonderful place, but not as touristy as other areas. Hastings is rainy. Clacton is not for me. Brighton is lovely but pebbly. Southend is my home, so I am biased when I say it is lovely. There is a small theme oark with the proper rollercoasters etc; and arcades right by the sea. Icecream and doghnut shops are at the sea front. There is a lovely pier, the longest in Britain until recently where you can get wonderful views, food etc; You can take a beautiful train ride down it, but walking it is lovely too. Some of the beach is pebbly, some is sandy. I have found crabs etc; around there. Cafes and resteraunts are lovely and it can be nice and warm (sometimes).

What about Bognor Regis. There's a fantastic beach there with proper sand and rock pools. It's not that much further than Brighton to drive or you can get a train from Victoria. We went there to the Butlins nearby with my daughter last year in October for a half term break and it was lovely. It's a proper old fashioned sea-side town.
For sheer cliffs and loads of sand and pretty little sea-side huts then Bournemouth is great and very drivable from London (stay at the Royal Bath hotel if you go there, it's lovely). There is also a huge park in the middle of Bournemouth which is very pretty. There are loads of restaurants and bars.

Places with a bit more 'class' I can think of:

In Kent: Sandwich, Whitstable, Folkestone

In West and East Sussex: Bognor Regis, Littlehampton (and in fact the whole coast along around Littlehampton), Seaford (beautiful cliffs), the area, especially the hills, around Hastings is also attractive, Bexhill has stunning art deco architecture.

In Hampshire: Southsea, Lymington

If you like shopping then Ramsgate is a good idea and it has a long beach as well.
