I don't deny there are liberals outside of the mainstream who would want to take away gun rights.

Mainstream liberals do not.

Is it just an extreme of conservatives who believe that all liberals want to do this? Do mainstream conservatives understand that mainstream liberals don't want to do that?

I think the biggest problem in America is that there are fringes on both sides that politicans are pandering too and they paint the other sides fringe as the other sides mainstream.

I realize that there are a lot of main stream liberals who also have guns and would fight for their rights to keep it that way. No, not all liberals want to take our weapons away... Just the extreme leftists do.

And as much as I distrust our own government, I believe that many in the upper level of representation, would also.

Actually, many of the mainstream liberals would like to see tougher gun control. I wouldn't mind seeing handguns reigned it- rifles and shotguns are fine, but hiding weapons isn't. That doesn't mean I want them taken away from people who already legally own their weapons, but I would like to see less new ones sold. It's not my top priority, but it's on the list.

But then again, mainstream conservatives aren't actually walking the streets armed to the teeth, either. Many don't actually own guns themselves, even if they are in favor of allowing others to do so.

The way I see it is the conservatives don't want any ideas that conflict with theirs. Honest journalism, however, tells both sides without being interrupted. I think of myself as conservative. The only changes I want are the ones I like. I don't want to have anything raise taxes, so I vote no to all bonds; I read the costs and believe it's more likely to be higher. In comparing myself to the conservatives in my family, who are staunch and will yell over each other to make the same point, I see that I'm liberal; they think if you don't agree with them that they have to say it louder. But I'm the black sheep of the family in my beliefs, so no one wants to hear me.

The liberals do. Not all Democrats are liberals though. Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader, is support by the NRA and gets donations from them.

Well, as a pro-gun socialist I have a different perspective on this... many if not most liberals DO want to take people's guns away.

And most conservatives would want to take MY guns away.

And Billy? "Neo-con" is an actual political term. Google "Leo Strauss."

That may be, but it is not the "Mainstream" Liberals who have power in the Democrat Party.

I don't believe that....I believe "mainstream liberals" are far to the left on this issue...but you're entitled to your opinion.

Welcome to politics! Where everything is white or black, with no gray. If you disagree with a liberal, you are called a "neo-con". If you disagree with a conservative, you are called a "communist".

To me, mainstream liberal and conservatives are really more in the center, just leaning one way or the other.
