I heard that the longer you leave to shave your beard off, the quicker and thicker it grows back. Is this true?

No. In fact, the additional heat generated by the increased light absorption (assuming you have dark whiskers) will probably slow the growth; although only slightly.
In short, it seems that DHT/Minoxidil is the way to go. Here's a lot of info on the subject:

It all depends on the bloke for some yes & for others its best to shave every day then leave it grow.Good Luck

No not really - you still get left with the same set of follicles. But give it a shot. Might be something in it after all.

not shaving is also good, but i have no idea if it affects beard growth.
