I was looking to buy a Panasonic DMR-EH55 DVD recorder because it had a large (200GB) HDD but couldn't find any except on eBay for huge sums of money. I thought I'd wait for the new models to come out, but none of them have HDD's anymore. Same with Toshiba. Is it too expensive, no demand or is the MPAA bullying them into it? I really don't want to get a TiVO or make a PC into a DVR.

When is product is dropped, it means it is not selling very well or it is not profitable.
As you mention, a DVD recorder with HDD competes with set-top boxes, Tivo, and low-cost PCs with a tuner.
For these boxes to be competitive with set-top boxes, they need two tuners and at least one of them to be now digital.
