Don't you Republicans ever get tired of smearing patriots? What do you think is so wrong about serving your country?

It seems to me that Harry Reid should have better things to do than say nasty things about Clarence Thomas. Somehow I think the people of Nevada elected him to represent them not criticize everyone who he doesn't agree with. Thomas is just the latest in a long line of people he has criticized. He comes across to me as a smarmy little guy who probably doesn't have many friends.

I see, and saw when Thomas was nominated, many similarities between him and Frederick Douglass.

Also I think Thomas is too hard on himself when he thinks that possibly his admission to Yale was based in part on racial preference.

His admission to Holy Cross surely was not - Holy Cross, which historically had mostly Irish and Italian 3rd and 4th generation students, has long endeavored to maintain a diverse student body by recruiting Blacks and Latinos. They scour the country for top Black and Latino students and they found Thomas, who had the top grades in the history of his high school.

If there was any racial preference in his acceptance to Yale from Holy Cross, I'd have to suspect that that only offset another bias - - - - the WASPs held on to the P much longer than they hung on to the WAS......

Bottom line, I've met many people of all races and ethnic backgrounds, and I've met some smart people and some stupid people and many in between - - - - - and race, color, ethnicity, has ZERO to do with brainpower or other ability.

The stereotypes just don't hold water. I coach sports - and the stereotype of the Black athlete who is athletically gifted but doesn't play the game cerebrally just doesn't hold water at all - it just has never been my experience.

I don't think it has been anyone's experience - I think we spend so much time focusing on defeating stereotypes that we reinvent them - we conjure them up again. I don't think "no place for hate" and that type of program should be taught in schools - it simply doesn't OCCUR to a child that there's any more difference between him and a child with different colored skin than there is between him and a child with a different colored sweater. In history class the kids will have to learn about slavery and the rest but why tell five and six year olds "we're all the same no matter what color we are" when it doesn't occur to them that we wouldn't be?

Thomas is a prime example - he's just a smart, accomplished person, and everyone tries to characterize him based on his race.

Should he exhibit so much anger about it? I don't know - I'd say it'd be easier for him if he didn't but put yourself in his shoes - has anyone ever told you you were wrong to hold a value or idea or opinion because people with your skin tone weren't supposed to hold it?
