I am applying and I know many people have said that it is easier to be accepted if you are female, the school is 70% male and 30% female.

They won't let you in if you are not qualified. On the other hand, qualified women are more likely to get in than men who are qualified.

Women at Georgia Tech have mixed feelings about having so many men around. They say that the odds are good -- but the goods are odd.

I don't know that it's necessarily easier, but they may give you more scholarships for being a "minority". They probably don't pick differently based on gender, but just look at credentials like everyone else does. . . probably only 30% of the qualified applicants are female, unfortunately, although a higher percentage of the female applicants are likely qualified than in the male population if you were to look at the detailed statistics.

I graduated from a smaller engineering school (usually quoted as 3:1 or 4:1), and I know they had some extra programs for women in engineering that gave out at least some smaller scholarships. Nothing major, but anything helps.

The guys always jokingly wanted to start a "white males in engineering" program. :)

P.S. Ditto on "the odds are good, but the goods are odd". . . we said the exact same thing where I went to school. :)

Taranto nailed it. You still need to meet their standards, but thing is, they get so many qualified men who apply that they reject perfect candidates. There are far fewer qualified women applying, so fewer of them get rejected.

So in effect, if you are qualified for admittance, then you stand a better chance of getting in if you are a female than if you are a male. But if you aren't qualified, it doesn't matter if you're female or male - you will be rejected.

You might have fewer competitors than the males do, but you will still have to meet the same standards. In other words, being female won't give you a free pass. You will have to work just as hard as the guys.
