If you do something "In Vain", It means that you have tried your Very Hardest and It did not work out. Which sometimes strangely enough, Is "All for the better". At least thats my Interpretation of the expression.
I am of course, ready to be corrected "If I am wrong"?.

If you did something exceedingly well, but the purpose was not served, it means you did it in vain.

it means you just tossed it off kinda flippantly without any respect - ie "taking God's name in vain."

It means that all your efforts were for nothing.

I would say you did it unnecessarily or with little effort and concern.
