I currently have two 512mb sticks of Kingston PC3200 ddr RAM in my computer. Can I add 2 more 512mb sticks if they are Samsung PC2700 ddr ram, even though the PC number is different? I do have the available slots and my motherboard can handle up to 4gb. Thanks!

Thanks!

That was kind of what i was understanding, that if i added the PC2700 that the 3200 would end up running at the slower speed. But yeah, I was wondering if the addition of another gig of RAM would offset the slower speed. Thanks!

Oh, and the reason I am considering this is because the PC2700 ram is free!

Depends on the system board. If you look at the memory, along the bottom where it plugs in there will be one or more "notches". Those have to line up with the matching "bumps" in the slot that holds the memory. If the memory will fit, you can use it.

However, the PC2700 memory is going to be SLOWER then the PC3200. Because a computer can not run at two different memory speeds, the computer will slow to the speed of the PC2700 memory. Odds are that the addition of MORE memory will offset the slow speed and the computer will run better then it did with the smaller/faster memory. But it might not...

You would be better to purchase PC3200 memory and keep them all the same.

yes, but the 3200's will automatically downclock to 2700 to match your slower sticks

always use the same type of RAM. get 2x2gb or 4x1gb of pc3200.
never mix'em up. it will either not work or make your pc unstable
