There is a huge difference between a minor infraction of the rules during a game that gets caught and then results in a minor penalty of yardage, and a major infraction of the rules off the field of play.
You're also talking about a broken rule of the competetion by one player during live action play. That is no where near similar to an organization as a whole breaking a clearly written rule that organizations are supposed to follow.
The league would like for it's blockers to not hold defenders while running a play. Therefore, a minor competition penalty of yardage is incurred when that rule is broken.
The league expects its organizations to uphold the rules of the league they are a part of. It expects the organizations to manage its players so that they do not use performance enhancing drugs. Hence, the 4 game penalty of Rodney Harrison. It also expects its organizations to manage it coaching staff to abide by the rules regarding signal stealing. Hence the $500,000 fine to Belichick and the $250,000 fine to the organization.

Did you even ask a good question anywhere? Does anyone have anything to complain about....what? Penalties being called? Those are called rules, that help to keep the game fair, and moderately safe. Also your talking about two different "penalties", one of which is financial and the other intangible. Im confused, but I just got 2 points so what the hell.

A penalty in a football game is NOTHING like what the Patriots did. You apparently don't understand the general concept of football and you give the girls that are real fans of FOOTBALL (the sport, the teams and the players) bad names with you whiny, old, bandwagon jumping, "Patriots didnt cheat" garbage.
They cheated point blank...they got caught RED HANDED and it is very embarrassing and ridiculous that Coach Billy stooped to that level...It just displays that he doesn't have very much faith in his own team.
I'd be willing to bet money that the guy you are dating is a Patriots fan and all the sudden you've found some NEW love for the Patriots...and football period!!! Other than Tom Brady I bet you couldnt name one player on the Patriots! Please keep your whiny BS to yourself because your just making real fans, who KNOW that the Pats messed up look bad!

The patriots got a "sideline warning" for a 15 yard unsporstmanlike penalty. the reality is, if the penalty fit the crime, the league would have to explain how the patriots haven't really benefited from the past 6 years of cheating (including three 3point superbowl wins). does the league really want to take a massive hit to the pocket book?

Penalties don't mean you cheated, they just made a mistake. There is alot of pressure during game play and many times instinct takes over and you forget about the rules.
Now there are times when penalties are done intentionally and it is the job of the refereee to see it.
But I ask you, do you ever speed? If you are not caught aren't you still a criminal?

Personally I agree with you people are blowing this Videogate thing way out of proportion I can't believe that they cheated like this for 7 years including super bowls and just barely got caught this year? year 7? please. They got the maximum penalty the NFL is allowed to give for the offense so they got punished they got caught that's it.
That said I must say that MOST penalties on the field are not as severe as this but there are worse penalties that have happened on the field in college and in the pros.
Before you go off and thing "Just another NE Homer" I'm a Detroit Lions fan and yes they have been accused of doing the same thing to my team as well.

The penalties called against teams every game isn't because they are cheating. And when players get fined, most of the time it's not because they were cheating, it's for unsportsmanlike conduct. Has nothing to do with cheating. This is the most pathetic attempt I've ever heard to try and justify what the Patriots did.

Penalties aren't necessarily a result of cheating. Mistakes are made in misunderstanding snap counts, substitution packages, misinterpreted signals and etc. Penalties are to ensure clean play ON the field, not cheating OFF it.

Wow what a silly comparison. So me getting caught HOLDING is the same as you knowing what play I am calling? Me getting caught OFFSIDES is the same as you cutting off my headset so my QB and Coach can't communicate, which is legal? Me moving before the snap on offense(false start) is the same as your headset working in the last 15 seconds of the Play Clock so your QB and Coach can keep talking anyway(which is ILLEGAL)? Do you really need someone to explain this to you? If so I'm not sure there is much, if any, hope for you. In short you are delusional.
