I'm doing a paper during the October term on the disintergration of tsarist Russia and I was off when we learned this topic in class. I would really appreciated if somebody could sum up the main points for me :)

This was my course last year.

Tsarist Russia-

- 1905 Revolution - Did not have the backing of the army so collapsed. October Manifesto was introduced but not implemented which made the people more angry. However, without the support of the army a revolution could not succeed because the army would kill the revolutionaries like they did on Bloody Sunday.

- People had been campaigning for their own local government etc..... before and since the emancipation of the serfs. This demand was made worse because the government had to cease land and supplies from the ordinary population to fund the war effort.

-A number of catastrophic defeats and general poor performance in the war meant that the people began to lose even more faith in the tsarist regime.

- Poor conditions for soldiers in the war and the disintergration of the country during the war led to further discontent. Tsar began to lose the support of the army.

-Revolution in the beginning of 1917 though do not think that one over threw the tsar and then there was another revolution later that year and then some time the tsarist family were executed to remove the figureheads of the opposition to the new regime.

The Russian Army performed very badly during WW1. It was ill equipped and trained and the common soldiers were led by an officer class that did not care about their welfare and obtained commissions due to their rank in the nobility and not due to their military competance.
The situation deteriorated by 1917 to the state where the front line soldiers were starving and ragged.
Some moderate socialists deposed the Tsar in March 1917 and tried to form a democratic government under Kerensky but in the next few months the situation failed to improve very much and a little known and supported party called the Bolsheviks increased their power by the ruthless personality of Vladimir Ulianov (Lenin).
In October of that year they formed the Soviets of Sailors and soldiers which united with the Soviets of the Peasants and defeated Kerenskys forces in battle went on to make peace with Germany and spread the Bolshevik revolution throughout Russia which resulted in a civil war which the Bolsheviks won.

Most Russians did not want to join in to the war. However, due to family ties (he married a German princess) the Tzar dragged the country into the war. The army was out of date, they suffered humiliating defeats. The Russian people resented this, and hatred towards the royal family, particularly the the Tzar's wife grew.
The Tzar was forced to call a duma (kind of a parliament) to get money; the costs of the war further added to resentment. Also the fact that the Tzar took personal responsibility for the army damaged his credibility.
Revolution became inevitable and eventually came off in 1917.
