A guy named Clyde Tombaugh in 1930. He was searching the skies for a new planet, suggested because astronomers believed Uranus and Neptune were not behaving as they should be. They proposed another planet out there influencing them with its gravity. Tombaugh believed he had found it.

However, later observations showed Pluto was too small to be having such a significant effect on Uranus and Neptune, and later still the Voyager 2 probe showed that the initial calculations were in error, and that those two planets were doing just what they were supposed to be doing. Tombaugh in a sense just got very lucky.

Pluto was discovered in 1930 by Clyde Tombaugh. Astronomers noticed that the orbits of Neptune and Uranus were being affected by the gravity of an unknown object in ths solar system. Clyde Tombaugh carefully studied images of the night sky and after a lot of hard work he finally discovered Pluto. Clyde Tombaugh was only 24 years old when he made this discovery.

edit: By the way, Pluto is no longer a planet, it was changed in 2006, when they found lots of similar "planets" in our solar system(it is too small to be a planet). So we have only 8 planets in our solar system anymore.
