you have 44 chromosomes, and 2 sex chromosomes. Each parent donates half of them. The female always donates an X chromosome, and the male will donate either and X or a Y. If you have XX, then you are a female, and XY you are a male. when these two genes have mutations, there are severe concequences.

There are 23 pairs of chromosomes in the human body of which 22 pairs are autosomes determining various triats and the 23rd pair are the sex chromosomes. Its this 23rd pair that determines the sex of an individual.
In males this 23rd pair comprises of XY chromosomes, while in females , its XX. When these chromosomes segregate, they are termed as gametes. In males they segregate into X and Y gametes(as it has XY chromosomes) and in females it segregates into X and X gametes.
So,during the genetic makeup of the child , if the X gamete of the male fuses with the X gamete of the female then the resulting offspring is a female and if the Y gamete of the male fuses with the X gamete of the female then the resulting offspring would be a male.
The X gamete of the female can be either of the two X gametes it possesses. In any which case, the female would contribute its X gamete only, but the male may contribute any one of the two different gametes i.e. either X or Y. so its the male that decides the sex of the child.
Hence , the male offspring would have XY chromosomes and the female offspring would have XX chromosome derived from the combination of its parent's gametes.
So, males are heterozygous (hetero=different) as they contain two different gametes and females are homozygous(homo = same). There are other species in which females are hetero. and males are homo. Its the heterozygous gender the always determines the sex of the offspring.
Also there is no YY chromosome in humans

Chromosomes are long, stringy aggregates of genes that carry heredity information. They are composed of DNA and proteins and are located within the nucleus of our cells. Chromosomes determine everything from hair color and eye color to gender. Whether you are a male or female depends on the presence or absence of certain chromosomes.

Human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes for a total of 46. There are 22 pairs of autosomes and one pair of sex chromosomes. The sex chromosomes are the X chromosome and the Y chromosome. These chromosomes determine gender.

In human sexual reproduction, two distinct gametes fuse to form a zygote. Gametes are reproductive cells produced by a type of cell division called meiosis. They contain only one set of chromosomes and are said to be haploid (one set of 22 autosomes and one sex chromosome). The male gamete, called the spermatozoan, is relatively motile and usually has a flagellum. The female gamete, called the ovum, is nonmotile and relatively large in comparison to the male gamete. When the haploid male and female gametes unite in a process called fertilization, they form what is called a zygote. The zygote is diploid, meaning that it contains two sets of chromosomes (two sets of 22 autosomes and two sex chromosomes).

The male gametes or sperm cells in humans and other mammals are heterogametic and contain one of two types of sex chromosomes. They are either X or Y. The female gametes or eggs however, contain only the X sex chromosome and are homogametic. The sperm cell determines the sex of an individual in this case. If a sperm cell containing an X chromosome fertilizes an egg, the resulting zygote will be XX or female. If the sperm cell contains a Y chromosome, then the resulting zygote will be XY or male.

xx chromosomes mean female... xy means male... the male is the one who choses the sex of a baby (hence the xy because the female will always give off an x and the male has 50% chance of giving a x or a y).

WEll..looking at chromosomes, Males have an XY and Females have an XX...so that is straight forward.

actual, the hormonal impression of the mummy can suppress the potential of the two the X or Y wearing sperm, and would reason anomalies which will reason a fetus with a Y to inherit 2 or greater X chromosomes from the mummy, and inflicting a fetus with a Y to advance as a woman.

If you examine cell chromosomes under a microscope (there are tricks to enable one to do this), the X and Y chromosomes can be identified. Males have one of each; females have a pair of X's.
