Thinkin about takin some leave time and riding from Killeen, TX to Chico, CA in December. I know that's the middle of winter, so I want to know if anyone else has ridden a similar route/time and could give me some advice. I have a 2007 Sportster 1200 C.

Been there and done that (sort of.... Dallas to LA).... in January. Pack some warm clothes...take the southern route....I20-->I10-->I8-->I5 and enjoy it. Keep in mind the southern route is plenty of desert or near desert area and you may need to keep your eyes open for gas stops/pit stops along the way. Riding that far on a Sportster will definitely build up some callouses on your butt.... so you might want to track down a gel-pack or replace the seat with something more conducive for a long ride.
Other than that....enjoy the breeze on your knees!
Ride Safe.

that long a ride at that time is a crap shoot. I've seen it dry and cold for the entire route, but I have also seen it snowing and icy too. No one can predict with accuracy what it will be like this year. Plan for the worst and hope for the best, have a backup plan and lot's of $$ to lay up in hotels if needed. The passes willbe the biggest worry, plan to hit em mid day and avoid em like the plauge at night.
Good luck and ride safe

Ya gonna freeze. And us Sportster riders know they can be a butt buster. Take your time, frequent stops take warm clothes and have a good time. Went to Riverside from Ok. last Thanksgiving on my Sportster I took three days so my backside could get some rest and loved the trip.

I-10 is pretty save, but i'd take I-40 a little colder in high counrty, maybe wet/
more to see along old route 66 to see, plus you got Vegas on way... arizons cold up north, cali not so cold but windy..so pack rain gear.. and dry shoes for nights. be sure to take off boots! so feet don't get cold uncomfortable plan gas stops with 1200 at least every 100 miles so you don't have to push it.. keep warm inside..

If you avoid the northern routes and the rocky mountains, and keep to the south you should be fine.
