Serious honesty is one thing, but when it badly or wrongly expressed, then it can easily become something else.
'Your fat' ~ is one thing.
'I think you're overweight' ~ is another.
According to the guidelines of the Body Mass Indicator, then most of our rugby players are 'over weight' AND 'unhealthy,' whereas , they are not 'unhealthy,' and their 'body mass' is invariably 'muscle' and not what it shouldn't be.
So a statement of 'fact' could be in error whereas a statement of 'an opinion' cannot be in error.
On the other hand, the PC Brigade seem to have things sewn up pretty tightly ~ and it is NOT a pretty sight.
It has been a while since I have flown, and I really don't want to go through that process at all ~ not just because of the lengthy check-in procedure, but because I hate the thought of being stuck next to someone on a plane who is fat and spills over the edges of their seat.
I have limitations of my own disability that I have to live with. So I'd hate to have to experience my own which are likely to affected by the infliction of theirs. It might sound cruel of me, but that is my reality.
Sash.

I grew up in a congenitally tactless family. It has taken time and experience to change brutally honest to gentle persuasion.
The pendulum swings to extremes in society until we find a more moderated form of dialog.
There will always be those who push the boundaries past what is necessary for the wrong reasons.
Let's consider motivation and intent, before we castigate someone or some group.
I won't tell you that you are fat, but I will tell you that your tail feathers are out of whack. You can fix that and I don't mind helping you to smooth them out.
C. :)!!

"We", our society has entered into a phase of dystopia or really more of a anti-utpoia state. Basically the PC issue is just the beginning; its brain washing really. "Everyone is equally no one has any differences" is the mantra of the day. Its the stripping away of individuality and who we really are. I have found that ingeneral most people preffer to be lied to than to hear the truth. I think humanity has entered a very dark age.

You make it sound like fat people don't know they're fat.
Why would you feel the need to point out flaws in others? Does that make you feel better about your pathetic little self? Is your little existence SO sad that you feel you have to point out the problems others face to them?
Everyone has flaws and problems, and they know about them. In fact, they're probably working hard to correct them. All that effort is really worthwhile when some asshat feels the need to point out the fact they're not perfect.
Maybe you don't realize how stupid you are.
Someone should tell you; then you'll know.
(That's sarcasm, by the way...)
Also, you misspelled fallacy, and it's no wonder you did so using the "ph" to begin. I only wished you'd have continued your Freudian error by spelling it "phallusy" instead of "phallacy," but it made me laugh anyway.

I agree, but when people tell me I'm fat, I just say I know! It's like:
"DON'T EAT THAT CHOCOLATE!!!! IT'S BAAAAAAAAAD! IT MAKES YOU FAAAAAAAAT!!!!"
(Me) "Erm... I'm already fat. Give me the chocolate!"
I'm not really thet ugly, I do have self-esteem! but I'm no Kate moss! Which is just as well, she's manky.
Anyway, I agree, PC-ness is taking over the world. In my old school they banned British Bulldogs because someone fell over.
Er, HELLO! That's what kids do! It's part of growing up!

Political correctness has gone too far. However theres still a major difference between honesty and being utterly insensitive as you are suggesting. Surely there must be some middle ground?

i could not help but respond...Wrdsmth is criticizing *you* by calling you STUPID?, and asking *you* why you have to point out people's flaws?...did he/she say that was wrong or right? because that was the most morbid exhibit of human behavior i have ever seen, to call someone "stupid".
to answer your question: there's nothing wrong with honesty, as long as you use TACT.
