According to Microsoft Vista requires 800Mb of Ram therefore with only 1GB you are very close to the mark and have very little left for applications and videos. Upgrade.

Definitly adding more RAM will not hurt. The more the better. Specifically with Vista 1 GB will get you going but you definitly want more.

[1 GHz 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

1 GB of system memory

40 GB hard drive with at least 15 GB of available space

Support for DirectX 9 graphics with:

WDDM Driver

128 MB of graphics memory (minimum)

Pixel Shader 2.0 in hardware

32 bits per pixel]

That is the recommended specs. Always good to exceed that by just a bit for better performance

Maybe. Not a very definitive answer but we need more info. Do you have a separate video card or are you using the built-in? If you are using the built-in then it is freezing because you are using shared memory. Buying a video card (I think most emachines use AGP and not PCI-E) with 256MB ram Will solve your problem a lot better than more ram would even though more ram would not hurt.

My question to you is WHY switch to Vista? Windows XP is a proven, robust operating system, whereas Vista has problems that have yet to be worked out. My advice would be to at LEAST wait until SP1 comes out in January for vista before trying to switch operating systems. Also, there are some other factors to consider. What is your processor speed? What kind of video is installed, etc.
Adding the additional RAM will boost your system performance in any operating system.

I have a Lenova PC with 1GB of RAM and initially I was using the integrated NVIDIA GF 6100. While the system worked OK for basic browsing and smaller streaming videos, I found that I really needed to add a dedicated video card to play games. I didn't try watching any DVDs on it so can't say how it would do with them. With my dedicated card (MSI 8600GT), I can play games with the video settings turned up with minimal performance issues. I do intend to add 1GB of additional RAM in the near future and I'm hoping that will keep the machine within the specs for most applications for the next couple of years.

NO. If you already have 1GB, then you have plenty of memory. I have a old laptop with just 512 MB (1/2 GB) of memory and it never freeze while watching movies. In fact it never freeze.

Try downloading MS service pack (patch) if there are any. Also Microsoft has some free download that runs in DOS mode to do a burn-in check of your memory.

You will need to create a boot CD and reboot. Other than that you probably have some Windows installation problem.

Good Luck.

P.S. When you run out of memory, your computer is NOT suppose to crash no matter what. It will run slower but still run. Anytime your computer crash, you have other problems beside lacking memory.

1 gig of ram is enough for vista to run ok. the problem isnt the amount of memory you have must be somewhere else

On Vista 1G is not a lot, it should help, but only if the problem is not due to a software error.
