It's one of those little half-size dishwashers. There's a pool of water at the bottom inside. Not leaking yet, but I'm concerned. What to do?

Besides calling a repair person, is there anything else I can do to fix the problem?

Is it connected to the garbage disposal? If so, make sure the hose connecting them goes higher (loops up) than where it attaches to the disposal, otherwise you will have some disposal water drain into the washer.

Usually people will rinse off a dish before they place it in the dishwasher. This wet dish drips water that collects at the bottom...so don't worry. When you first turn on a dishwasher the first thing it does is turn on the drain dump to get all this old dirty water out before it starts to fill with clean water.

the pool of water will be there if you stopped the dishwasher in the middle of the cycle or if the drain in the bottom is partially clogged

Sounds like it is not draining correctly. Make sure that nothing is stopped up in the bottom or in the hoses that drain.
