If it came "bundled" with your laptop and you uninstall it, you will not be able to go back. Also, XP is most definitely is not free.
I was initially intimidated by Vista, but it came with my laptop. I bought a couple of used books at Amazon (half price, excellent condition) and here are some links you might want to bookmark:

I think, if you use classic view (as I have) it will look more familiar to you and will help you get used to it.

Microsoft XP is an operating system that must be bought and paid for! It is not free!
With that said, try contacting the manufacturer of your PC or Laptop.
Microsoft is actually allowing downgrades from Vista to XP. It is for a limited time only and involves only certain versions of XP. If you are eligible, your PC or laptop manufacturer will send you a disk to make this happen.
As an example of this program, I include the link to the Lenovo site for this.

then use an unlocking program to bypass activation.

Go die.... No such things as free. If you want to change, just go to the nearest computer shop. But for me i dont get it with your question. Get lost for free things.
