Depends what you like. You've got to take a vaporetto down the Grand Canal, get fleeced for a coffee in Piazza San Marco (or if you're really mean there's a cafe in a side street next to the Cathedral), go round the Doges palace and get jostled over Rialto bridge. After that, you're free to do what you want.
If you get fed up with the crowds and commercialism take the ferry to Torcello - there's not a lot there, just an 11th century cathedral, a 5th century church, and two excellent restaurants. Then if you're missing the tourist tat, call in at Burano on the way back and buy a tablecloth (made in China).

Venice is lovely! You should buy a DK Eyewitness Guide for Venice, and what should you see ...
The Grand Canal of course, and the Rialto Bridge; San Marco and the tower, the views from up there are stunning; Basilica San Marco; and basically just wander through the city because it's marvellous. Take in the Bienniale if you can, that's on around now. Take the Vaporetto out to the Lido and the other islands, get a 24-hour ticket, it's very good value.
When you go into a cafe, do not sit down for coffee, they charge a phenomenal amount for it. Just do as the natives do, ask for a cafe al volte and drink it at the counter.
But it's all good in Venice. There really is so much. Bring good shoes for walking. Your feet will thank you!

Venice is stunning, expensive, crowded at all times of year, has small hotel rooms and the food isn't highly regarded! It is also an absolute tourist trap! A Marguerita will set you back up to 25 Euro! Don't buy anything on St Mark's Square - not even a bottle of water! In jewellery shops be prepared to do some gentle bartering to get a better price 'Will you give me 15% if I buy this and this' often gets a result but be polite about it! Despite its quirks Venice is not to be missed! It is a top destination! Don't do gondolas (unless you're filthy rich) or water taxis (ditto). Take the vaparetto - water buses - the way the Venetians do - get a map of the system - it's straight forward and cheap. Venice is small and easy to walk around - this is the best way to see it. Generally you are pretty safe in Venice although there are pickpockets at tourist popular places eg San Marco. Get the vaparetto out to the islands in the Lagoon for a great morning out, don't miss the Jewish Quarter in the city and eat at Marissa's restaurant at least once - you'll have to book it but it is a true find! - only Italians eat there and the last time I went I had something delicious that I didn't recognise. When I asked they told me it was 'Bambi' - ask for the Bambi then! Drink Prosecco - the Venetian 'champagne' its light and delicious and affordable. Ask about the churches - there are stunning buildings to visit and some of the best art collections in the world. One thing worth noting is that the Venetians dress up. They don't do sloppy. If you're in trainers and Matalan jeans you won't get the respect that you would in smarter kit. It's subtle but, if you want to get the best out of Venice wear your Sunday best every day! Enjoy it. One of my favourite cities in the world!

If your're flying in, take the water bus from the airport. (turn left out of departures and just keep going and follow the signs), the bus has a few stops before hand but eventually docks close to St Marks. If you're interested in maritime history go to the Arsenal. Buy food coffee etc outside of St Marcs as the prices there are crazy. Just meander some of the streets, cross bridges, eat and enjoy. Try the fish & fruit market in the morning. And haggle if you want a gondola.

Lets hope tomorrow isn't the day when Venice finally sinks below the water table. Taking a bit of a chance going there you know. It's goind to disappear one day, and that day might be tomorrow. Anyway, enjoy yourself darling, and don't get crushed in the fights to board to gondollas should tomorrow be the day

take the courtesy bus from airport and then train into centre, much cheaper. if you have alot of money take a trip on a gondella, (complete rip off,) see just as much on the vaporetta. we found our hotel cheaper to eat in than out in restaurants, three days there and i was ready to come home, usual sightseeing, also good warm clothes as it can get quite chilly, and maybe a pair of wellies at this time of year. anyway, enjoy.
