The reason it is bad for your car is most transmissions are not being properly lubrucated when they are in nuetral (the oil is all laying in the bottom) buit stuff in there is still spinning because the car is moving. Therefore certain parts won't have oil on them and will wear out. Plus, gearing down helps you to slow down and maintain control over the vehicle. It won't wear out your clutch and transmission, it is made to do that.

Putting the transmission of a car that is moving is bad practice and not something you should do (except for having to go through neutral on your way between gears). Use of compression braking is also the proper way to keep from going too fast down a steep hill (as the heat goes out the exhaust pipe instead of fading your brake pads) and it also saves fuel because modern cars can completely turn off fuel flow to the engine as you slow down if your car is still in gear.

Though you should stop gently as much as you can (because that does reduce wear on brake pads and prevents the tailgating idiot behind you from running into the back of you) and you might also find that the traffic signal changes before you stop in which case you waste less fuel accelerating back up.

Probably not gonna be bad for your brakesm, but it is abd for your car. And could be dangerous for you. You always want to have your car in gear, unless you are complteley stopped. Even then, you should have your car in gear, but it is not absolutely necessary. If a situation shoudl arise suddenly where you need to get going again, the response time to get uyou car going again would be less if you keep your car in gear. So, keep that car in gear, and stay safe!

It is no different from pressing down on the clutch when doing heavy breaking.
One of the objects in driving is to try to avoid such situations. Learning accident avoidance means learning how to use more then just the horn and/or brakes.

no .no damage to the car or parts but you may want some type of control of the transmission in case you need to speed back up again..for any reason..i think its always best to downshift

No - as long as you're not slamming them on. If you tend to do that, you could wear down your rotors before you wear your brakes.
