A 6-year-old little girl was dropped off at school by her mother. The mother didn't realize that school was not in session that day. The lady that was working in the office told the little girl to go flag down her mother. When the girl was unable to locate her mother still outside the little girl started wondering around. She was found 8 blocks from the school. Should the school be responsible?

Where is the compassion these days? No sane minded grownup should be sending a six year back outside to flag down their mother, all by the theirself. The grownup should've gone outside with them, seeing as they were going to be all alone, and being a typical six year old, could just wander off, or worse yet, be picked up. The school is to blame, and they need to retrain the grownups on the correct proceedure to follow whenever a kid is dropped off at school on a free day. If parents were more aware of whats going on in their childs life, things like that wouldn't be happening. I blame the parent too.

That lady would be responsible for the little girl if something happened to her. She must have had asked who is her mother and the telephone number so she could call the mother and to tell her to pick her kid as the school is not in session. Otherwise, she would keep the kid in her office for awhile and get help/info to find the mother of the kid. A 6yrs old has no much knowledge where to go so as the tendency to wonder everywhere. If old people might lost their ways for some reasons, how much more with that kid?
If I'm just the mother of the kid, the hell they would be in trouble with me and the administration!!!
Addm: Plenty answers are blaming first the mother of the child. Take note, the child was inside the premises of the school already. It's the school negligence esp the lady. Whether the school is not in session, as long as the kid is dropped there and had entered already the school, they have a big responsibility for that.

While the lady in the office should have gone outside with the little girl to flag the mother down, I'm not to quick to always blame the school. The blame lies with both the office worker and the mother. The mother should be well aware of what is happening at her child's school.

First off the mother needs to pay attention to what is going on. Why didnt she know that school was in session...to hung over from being at the bar last night? Often times when school is not in session there are few if any people their. The woman may assumed that the child would just come back if she was not able to get her and then they would call home. It starts with the mother not knowing whats going on in the childs life. It starts here and then they have no idea at all what they are doing when they become teens. Poor parenting is becoming more of the norm in our society!

I agree with some others. The office lady should have acted responsibly and taken the little one out to flag down her mom. And the mom needs to pay more attention to when her child has a day off from school. Most schools these days have calenders on the internet. Our school sends home a year long calender that lists all school holidays and days off. I would imagine if there was no school that day then their would be no cars in the parking lot which certainly would send me a red flag.

Yes.Help was only a phone call away.I had already posted then read the other answers I live directly across from a high school on any given day there are MANY AND PLENTY vechiles in the parking lot even on a Sunday and the only day in 2 years i haven"t seen a vechile there was Christmas day .I don't think you should blame the mother schools responsibility to send a note home or otherwise post so that everyone knows what day isn't a regular school day.

I don't understand when you say school was not in session then who was in the office. Where i live when there is no school the people in the office gets the day off as well. Which means the building would be closed . Than the mother did not notice on her way to take her child to school she seen no other kids going to school. Why would you drop your kid off outside the building when there is no one else there. I go for the mother because we have to safeguard our kids.

The last adult (the office lady) should be held responsible.
The mother should get her eyes examined, didn't she notice the absence of the school bus, other kids, cars in the parking lot, etc?

Maybe the mom did know there was no school but figured someone would take care of her kid anyway? People are doing crazy things these days.

I would say 50-50. We are all responsible for all the children. When one so young is in distress, nothing is more important the office worker should have seen to it the child safe. And the mother is so oblivious to the world she did not know there was no school and she didn't notice anything unusual at the school?

Both are liable. The mom more so. She didn't notice that there were NO OTHER KIDS on campus while dropping off her child?

The lady in the office should have taken the child inside and had her sit while her mom was contacted.

Sheesh, this is really a scary situation to put a six-year-old in!
