Goldfish can have lifespans up to 20+ years if they are fed a varied diet and housed in exceptional water conditions. They need to be in tanks that are not overcrowded. They need sufficient swimming room and do best if they are kept with their own types.
The oldest living Goldfish to date was a goldfish named Tish owned by Hilda and Gordon Hand of Thirsk, N. Yorkshire, England. Tish lived for 43 years after being won at a fairground in 1956.

In a proper 20 gallon tank where water perameters are closely adhered to a common goldfish can live into their 30's. The oldest common goldfish died at the age of 43!
If you have the fish in less than ideal conditions, like a bowl or tiny tank, they usually don't live a month. Tiny tank is ANY tank under 10 gallons. 10 gallons would be a very small tank. A 55 gallon is a suitable home for 4 or 5 goldfish. So the skinny on goldfish is the better you take care of them the longer they will live. If you have goldfish dieing fequently assume you are doing something wrong. They are not supposed to die on a monthly basis. Goldfish kept in ideal conditions rarely get sick and die. I have had my 4 fish for 5 years now and they are still just pups with much more room to grow.

What is the average? Or how long can they live.Unfortunately this is usually a child's first pet and they don't de-chlorinate the water, feed 1 fish enough for 20 and the fish don't make it through the first 2 or 3 days. I have some common goldfish in my pond that were purchased in 1976 and I just ran out to see if they are still swimming and they were . They get HUGE!

Unfortunately, many people keep their Goldfish in tiny tanks or bowls. Goldfish should obtain an adult size of 1.5 feet and need a POND. They should also live more than 20 years. Keeping them in tiny tanks (like 12 Goldfish in a 12 gallon tank) is killing them. If you want any Goldfish for a 12 gallon tank, go get a SINGLE Fancy Goldfish and give away the Comets. Email me if you have any questions.

Providing you give it the correct conditions you could be looking at well in excess of 20 years. Sadly the answer to your first question is usually about a week because many people don't realise what these wonderful creatures are capable of.

My fathers oldest in the pond is 32 but they can reach double this. In an aquarium around 15-20yrs at a guesstimate .My 1.5" are this years young in the pond . It depends how large a tank what filtration (if any) and maintenance you carry out as most succumb to this before old age etc.

They can live for quite a long time. I don't know the average lifespan, but I can tell you from experience that mine in my pond have been there for about 7 years, and they don't show any signs of aging...besides being enormous.
