Oh thanks, so during which years did the yankees reach the level at which they had to pay the luxury tax?

Jeremy is correct about the luxery tax which was imposed in 2003. The Yankees have had to pay every year since then for exceeding the payroll amount. The Red Sox have paid every year since 2004.

There is NO salary cap in baseball
just a luxery tax if you have a certain amount of salary.and then yankess have been over each and every since the salary cap has been in force since 1995 i beleive

You can spend whatever you want as long as you pay the luxury tax. Several teams do this every year. That money goes to the poor teams who refuse to spend money and don't make money. I bet the top 5 teams teams practically support the bottom 10 teams.
