I personally love my iPod shuffle, but I also have an old Creative Zen Nano MP3 player (which is similar to a Sony/Phillips-type one), and I think they each have their good points. First of all, I love the iPod because it is just so cute, it is almost like a piece of jewelry clipped on to my shirt. That's another thing- I love how it clips on because it is so easy to take everywhere and I don't have to worry about dropping it like I did with my old MP3 player. On one hand, I'd have to say the MP3 player is superior to the iPod, because it plays MP3's as well as WMA files and WAV files, which is cool because almost all of the music I had on my computer was on Windows Media Player. Now that I have my iPod, I have no choice but to rip all my CDs to iTunes, all over again. There is a program that converts WMA files to MP3 or MP4 files, but I think it's sort of hard to do.
Another cool thing about the MP3 player is that it has a lilttle read-out that shows the name of the track and the artist, whereas iPod Shuffle does not have that. So if it's important to you to know who's singing the song you're hearing, Shuffle might not be for you.
One last good thing about the iPod- it has a rechargeable battery, which is something I never thought about until I had to spend a lot of money on replacement AAA batteries for my old MP3 player. If you listen to it heavily, you tend to go through at least one battery every 4-5 days, and that can add up!
Bottom line: both of them have their charm- iPod has a better design and is more durable (I think), but MP3 players are more compatible with PC's and various music file types. Hope you like whatever you pick!
