You need a wire only if you are using dial-up or normal modem. Try to get a wireless modem and a Wi-fi adapter if your computer is not already having it.
And i think there is something called router and (i think) we can have satellite connections. I don't really know.
And your quetion is not silly.

The normal method is to subscribe to an Internet Service Provider (avoid AOL) who will set up your phone line for broadband. You can use dial-up (dial-up is analogue, broadband is digital) but it's obsolete so always choose broadband.

If you are in the UK, take a look at websites like Broadband Genie to compare prices and read reviews about customer satisfaction (or lack of). Talk Talk have poor customer service, but their cheapest package is about £18 per month with your line rental being paid to them instead of your old phone provider (BT probably) which makes the actual price of their 2Mbs package (2Mbs is the speed of the connection) about £6.50 - a very cheap deal.

Another way is to use wi-fi and connect to the internet at internet "hot spots"; these are at places such as big indoor shopping centers where you can pay to use their broadband connection. There are also places where the networks are unencrypted and so open for anyone to use.

If you have a friendly neighbor who has broadband internet and a wireless router, you can ask if he or she will let you have the password to use it; you will need a wireless network card or adapter of some description in your laptop (many new laptops have them built-in as standard); when you click on the icon for it, you will see a list of available networks (internet connections) and by clicking on your neighbor's network you can access the internet by typing in the password for his or her router. But it does depend if the router is within range - if your neighbor is right next door you can probably get a fair signal even to a cheap router.

No only if you use dial-up.for high speed or broadband you can go wireless by using a wireless router. and it will use the same connection you already have. als some internet companies offer chips that you pay a monthly fee for internet service and you can take your laptop anywhere you go.good luck, best wishes.

Does your laptop have WiFi? If so, you need a Wireless router.

Call your ISP for more info.

No. Check out wireless technology.

Linksys has a nice tutorial, you don't have to buy their products to learn.
