Among other things, explorer paints your icons on the screen, and the start bar. If you kill it, they disappear. Leave it alone.

Considering that you probably went ahead and did that, which you shouldn't do, because as everyone else said, it is a windows process. But let's say you did, you can get it back without a restart. When you end it, your screen goes blank, except for the background. When it does, hit control alt delete, and then click processe, new process button in the top. Type explorer.exe in the box and then hit run, or okay and everything will come back. You can also play jokes on people when they are working on something, end task the explorer.exe and then do the above steps to get it back exactly as before. Hope this helps.

I would say that it is a process that is the result of another process (natural selection). Evolution is the effect. Natural selection is the mechanism. If you remember that the word evolution just means 'change', then it makes sense to say that 'change' is a process that is the end result of another process (natural selection). Actually to be more accurate, we would say that evolution (the change in species over time) is a process that is the result of several processes (mutation, natural selection, and genetic drift). And these processes themselves are the result of other processes: Mutation is a process caused by the errors in replication. Natural selection is a process caused by the process of environment acting on phenotypes of individuals. And genetic drift is a process caused by the process of random matings, reproduction, and chance events. So there is no conflict in saying that one process is the result of other processes.

No, explorer is a key part to windows, it consists of the desktop and the start menu. Your computing experience will be greatly diminished if you end it as it will make all your desktop icons and your start menu disappear.
You can try it and see for yourself, it won't hurt anything. Once it's gone, the easiest way to fix it is to just restart the computer.
