A centrist will try to position themselves in the exact median demographic on any issue. Their position is the exact middle-of-the-road. A Moderate, will examine the issue, and all the viewpoints, and choose the position that seems most rational, but it,(Their position), will never be on the radical side of any debate.

A moderate is a term relative to the party, centrist is a term based in absolutes. "Moderate Republican" means middle of the Republican road. Centrist means just middle of the road.
In numbers, with 0 being liberal and 100 being conservative, moderate Democrat would be around 35, centrist would be around 45-55.

Nothing. A moderate and centrist are politician's that claim to be open minded on issues and make decisions based on the evidence. However, this political stance does not require a person to have definitive beliefs. When it comes to issues they can vote based on the direction the political wind is blowing. I consider moderates followers as a general rule, they determine which direction the crowd is moving and follow.

A centrist has put some thought into appeasement and has managed, however lamely, to rationalize it.
Moderates just can't be bothered.
