The ignition tells the coil when to send electricity to the spark plugs. The plugs create a spark which ignites the gasoline in your cylinders which causes combustion. This allows your engine to run.

To start your car, your relay switches to allow your battery to supply power to the starter motor. The starter motor then starts the engine until combustion starts. Then your engine does all the work and your alternator takes over to supply the car with electricity. An alternator is like a generator. The engine spins a rotor within a stator and that creates current.

The ignition system supplies electrical current of a very high voltage to spark plugs at exact predetermined time to spark and ignite the compressed mixture of fuel and air of correct ratio. When the crank wheel turns,it raises the pistons towards the head. The spark occurs when the up going piston fully compresses the mixture. The car engines are different. They have 3/4/6/8/12 plugs. The ignition system is so timed that each plug gets electrical charge at different time. The car will not start for two main reasons. One is fault in the ignition system and the other is fault in fuel supply system. As such it has immense importance.
