Championships. That's it George, now you can throw Torre under the bus! Now that you've used him up, do what you do best, fire him! Fire everyone! And while you're at it, fire yourself!

If this maniac ends his relationship with Torre in such a bush league manner, I for one will have second thoughts about supporting this team while he remains the owner. Some things are more important than winning all of the time. What are your thoughts on this subject?

I was very saddened when my Yankees lost last night ---Especially since I was AT the game they WON on Sunday night... but to totally blame the one manager in baseball with the BEST RECORD in ALL of Baseball, and to get rid of him now would be SO WRONG... especially since half the players on the team have said if Joe goes, so will they... Can you imagine the Yankees without Jeter, A-Rod, Damon, Posada, Melky, and Abreu? NOT ME... Whatever you think of the Yankees, they HAVE had the best record in baseball HISTORY and Joe has kept it going for 12 YEARS... Maybe they didn't win the big dance, but no other team has been in the playoffs more since Joe became manager... George will lose his players AND a good portion of the fan base that keeps HIM in his lovely home and fancy cars if he dumps Joe....maybe George should start thinking about being LOYAL for once rather then being STUPID... Most Yankee fans are still realing over what he did to BERNIE WILLIAMS... can he afford to make 2 MAJOR STUPID MOVES in one YEAR???? I hope not. WISE UP GEORGE --Keep Joe, Keep A-Rod, keep Jeter---KEEP THIS TEAM---there are a few you CAN get rid of... but if you break everyone up, I for one will seriously have to think about where MY loyalities are and so too will HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of current Yankee fans .... I was at the game Sunday night and when you looked at all the Yankee t-shirts on the fans--the most prominent were JETER, POSADA, A-ROD and DAMON... fire Joe and the shirts will also be gone...along with their wearers...

Probably the most interesting question in a while! I believe that Torre will be brought back. I think George did his famous let's pressure the guy to win by putting his job on the line and maybe he will win the series. That way never works. If anything, it makes the team play worse. That would be on their mind the entire game and their focus would be shifting between the game and big Joe. Like you said with all of the playoff apps, WS victories, Divison Titles, etc... it is a great point. Torre has been on top ever since he joined the Yankees. George is making it sound like the Yankees were in dead last and were a laughing stock to the baseball world. They were far from that! Some teams would kill to have what the Yankees have (minus the payroll). A team would love to make the playoffs year after year after year. However, the one thing working against Torre right now is the Yankee Reputation. Their rep is to win year after yer after year. The fact that they haven't won a World Series title since 2000, makes George a little uneasy. He got so use to being on top and always winning. And now that they dont have that, it is hard for him to accept that and deal with the situation like a gentleman -- not an idiot like he is now. Torre is one of the best managers their are. He is calm, cool, and collected. He has a great way with the media, and everyone he works with. Another thing is who would they bring in? I have found flaws in every candidate -- the main ones being Mattingley and Girardi. Tony La Russa's name also got thrown into the mix. Mattingley is too inexperienced and said it himself that he was not ready for the managerial job. La Russa is too much of a sour puss and isn't well liked. Finally, Girardi is a huge control freak and the people he would work with would hate him. That's why he was fired as manager of the Fish. He was too controlling and wasn't well liked amongst the players, coaches, and the rest of the organization. In my opinion, keeping Torre is the only logical decision that can be made! (Hope you enjoyed reading this essay of an answer.) =D

We'll see if it really happens. Steinbrenner didn't say with certainty that they wouldn't bring Torre back if they lost, I think his exact words were "I don't think we'd bring him back" or something like that.

Just making the playoffs this year after such a bad start is a accomplishment. I'd certainly bring Torre back I was Steinbrenner.

This situation reminds me of a old Saturday Night Live sketch. Steinbrenner hosted the show and in this sketch he was the owner of a grocery store. Phil Hartman was the store manager and when he suggested that they might have to fire a problem employee, Steinbrenner says something like, "I don't know, to fire a man, I just don't think I can do it." When Hartman presses him, he says "Well, what if I just say blame the manager, and fire you?! Then I hire someone to take your place, and the first time something goes wrong, I fire him and maybe hire you back?! I tell you, only an idiot would run a business that way!"

That sketch was probably 20 years ago so I'm paraphrasing, but you get the idea. It was pretty damn funny.

It is Steinbrenner that believes veteran players are the way to win championships and not Torre. It is hard to argue with success and the Yankees have had some great years under Steinbrenner control. However, I would have to agree with you as far as Torre is concerned. I believe he is the right man for the job and it would be a huge mistake if he were replaced. The Yankees actually have the ability to reload next year with some good young pitching and I expect them to be right back in the mix and I believe Torre has earned the right to manage next year's team based on his past contributions.

In George's world anything less than winning a World Series is a loosing season....What the Yankees did this year was great...All of Baseball had the Yankees written off before the All Star Break...They fought back and played hard....Got the wild card and lost...If this was any other team in MLB the owner would be proud of his Manager and the coaching staff but this is the NY YANKEES and they play by George's rules...Its a shame that Torre is probably going to get fired and what he has done for this club will be forgotten by George because he did not get him another RING!!!

12 years! Look how many times Billy was hired and fired in that time span. I actually think that George has mellowed.

However George is Mad! Mad I say! His unethical way of doing things speaks in volumes.

Does Torre deserve to be fired, I can't say.

Does he deserve to be let go in a manner more fitting to someone who has always been classy every step of the way? Absolutely. Joe deserves better tthen this.

Mel knew that when he left what would someday transpire, I think it had alot to do with Mel getting out when he did.

I will miss Joe, I only hope that the next Yankees manager is as gracious and classy as Torre. He will be missed

Mick,I'm an older fan (55) and I remember the glory days pre Steinbrenner.I'm a Tiger fan and remember seeing Mickey Mantle hit a homer into the bleachers of old Tiger stadium-(1961?-9 yrs old). It's truly sad to see this meglomaniac make this team his little playtoy.Joe Torre has tried to restore some old Yankee glory.I was rooting for Cleveland last night, but was very touched to see Torre at the press confo after the game,a very humble, quiet man.I say let him go and take his skills to a team that will appreciate him fully.Let Steiny try to find someone to match his management prowess.Don't fret,Mick, your Yankees are immortal and will restore the glory days(hopefully Steiny will be a bad memory).

They can't really fire him though, if I am not mistaken, his contract is up.
All they can do is not offer him another one.

As I said last night, this is a lose-lose situation for Steinbrenner, if he tries to get Torre back, he was blowing smoke and if he doesn't, it doesn't show passion, it shows George as the spoiled rich kid he is, always wanting things his own way without ever realizing how hard it is to win something all the time.

Whatever you decide Mick, best of luck

Just one small correction. In 12 years they won 10 division titles not 11. Yankees were also a wild card team in 1997 when Baltimore won the division.

You act like Steinbrenner has been a clear thinker his whole life and has only now started acting like an asshole. He has been like that for as far back as I remember. The Yankees can keep all of their rings. I will be content knowing the Red Sox do their best to put a good team on the field and when they fail their upper management deals with it gracefully.

I happen to like Joe Torre and wish him the best. He is going to get screwed by "The Boss"
