Forenames can have a meaning - think, for example, of all the girl's names that are linked to flowers. Others are incredibly old - my middle name is Daniel which is a name that appears in the Old Testament. Surnames usually have some kind of a meaning - sometimes to do with a trade which is why Smith and Miller or Schmidt and Mueller are so common in western Europe as they were important trades in the Middle Ages when our current forms of names came into being. Some surnames might be linked with how an ancestor looked, or where they lived. Whole books have been written on the subject and an answer here can only scratch the surface of the subject - which is a fascinating one.

Yes names do have some history. usually the names show the original destination of the family with their village name county or state name etc. or they come from their profession like Smith carpenter etc. as far as names are concerned they represent the names of some star, rivers, flowers etc. usually the quality of that particular object.

just take your family name as an example, ask your parents or your grandparents for its history.
