The link below has pretty much everything you need.

The MS knowledge bas is very good and will give you far more info than I can here.

Keep the router in the equation definately!

In brief you need to setup a workgroup there is a wizard to do this for you using a USB flash drive to make it even easier.

Then you simply hace an adhoc network both computer can work as servers and clients at the same time. All you need to do then is enable file sharing and printer sharing how to do that is in the Link. Also it is good to map a network drive so it pops up on your my computer screen.

Your router will manage the network and internet sharing. I would advise once you have it set up to use the Mac Filtering option and at least WEP encryption. Change the default network name and password and once its running smoothly stop broadcasting the name. How to this is in the router control program and literature/readme files.

Good luck be patient and use system restore if your not sure. That way you can always go back and try again.

The router will make things alot easier so keep it. The best thing for you to do is to run the wireless network wizard in control panel. After doing that if you ahve problems or questions come back here.

If they both connect to the router then they are already networked. You just need to enable File Sharing in Control Panel.

No, they are no longer. the version consists of what style of connection and hardware the computing device will seek for. in case you do a commonplace community setup wizard, it is going to assume to locate an Ethernet or no longer basic under pressure connection. in case you run the instant setup, abode windows will seek for instant hardware on or linked on your gadget, attempt communique with a instant get admission to factor and supply you an attempt to pass into the protection keys mandatory to get admission to the instant internet if mandatory. a commonplace router in uncomplicated terms has Ethernet or no longer basic line ports jointly as a instant router would have broadcast antennae and a few even have the two.

as buddy said use your computer as ad hoc , and as for
security buddy is wrong do not use wep , use wpa psk aes
or better wpa2 psk aes (you might need to firmware upgrade
your router to get wpa 2) as for mac filtering it doesnt do
anything, also disabling ssid broadcast can increase your
security risk , because netstumbler can see access points
with ssid disabled and a hacker will know evertime you go
online because your name will get broadcasted off and on
when you are online , thats good for eavesdropping.
