"CL" was a derivative of Type "C", the "L" was for "leicht" ("light").
The CL-Class designation was first used in 1998 for the full-size luxury coupe previously known as the S-Class Coupe. The CL-Class is a limited-production, luxury coupe

I know this is an old topic but literally all of the answers here are completely wrong.
CL stands for Coupé Leicht (Coupé-Light, not as in weight but as in length) or more commonly Coupé Luxusklasse (Coupé-Luxury)
The CLS is NOT based on the CL, it uses an E class chassis, has a 4 door coupe styling and sits below the S class and above the E class in the model hierarchy.
The Smart car is NOT based on the A class at all but was part of the same concept branch that spawned the A class.

The CL designation for Mercedes-Benz automobiles here in the states started in 1998 with the CL 600. It was the coupe version of the W140 Chassis. Later, in 2000, it was more of a cross between a coupe version of the S class and E class as it shared no common chassis parts from either vehicles. In 2006, MB decided to confuse the American car buying public further with the release of the CLS, a 4 door version of the coupe, using the same chassis as the coupe. It is perhaps MB most unappealing vehicle made to date.
The CL designation is certainly not the cheapest model of car you can purchase here in the states from MB. The person who posted that should do a bit of research before posting such dribble. The cheapest car from MB here in America is the Smart car (a derivative of the A class). They start at $19000. The CL class starts at $87000. Not what I'd call cheap!
