I know Americans are supposed to like their films to have a happy ending with all the happy characters riding into the sunset but is that true?

If so, why?

I don't really like happy ending. Most of them tend to be cheesy

Only when I am in a massage parlor. Just like most generalizations that is a stereotype. It's like saying most Europeans like only sad films. See how that sounds.

You really shouldn't generalize like that, as it could lead to a lot of negative feed back. Especially since generalizations tend to be wrong.

Having given that warning, I'll say this: I, personally, like happy endings because it gives me an optimistic outlook on life. I can't always have a happy ending in my own world. My frog prince turned out to be a toad, my pumpkin carriage is now (smashed) pumpkin pie, and my captain of a father just got mutinized. I have enough despair in my own life, I don't need this to reflect in the films I watch.

No I don't always like a happy ending in the movies I watch. It be nice to see the bad guy win. And if he doesn't chat up the next 1/2 hr with the person he is going to shoot and kill maybe he would. But no they have to stand there and tell them. Now this is why I'm going to kill you. Giving time for the hero to rush in and save the day. Pull the dam* trigger for crying out loud! :)

Because Americans are optomistic by nature. We know that if we keep trying, everything will turn out find. Even in the darkest moments, we have that faith in ourselves. Also, we just hate to have a good sunset go to waste.

everybody loves a happy ending. movies that end in a sour or sad ending tend to leave the viewer in a bit of a sense of loss, as we tend to identify with characters in them....

N I actually like a more down to earth ending where some characters die andeveryone feels bad.Americans just like to see the good things so they can ignore anything that's real.
