Hey Rambo,
It depends if you are talking English Vest- ie an undershirt or an American Vest ie A Waistcoat.
I wear waistcoats a lot - they are a smart way to finish off a more formal look. They are a nice alternative to a cumberbund when worn with a tuxedo and sometimes if the weather is warm, it still can look smart without the need to wear a jacket.

In England, a vest is what Americans call a T-shirt. I may wear one in summer if I travel to hotter areas. Here in SF, weather is moderate, so one rarely wears them. Technically, a vest has sleeves (maybe short) and covers the hips. A waistcoat is sleeveless and covers most of the waist but not the hips. Some suits have waistcoats that some people wrongly call vests. None of my suits have them. I do wear a white formal waistcoat with "white tie and tails" to the opera. For daytime formal occasions, I wear a grey waistcoat with my cutaway coat and ascot.

I only wear a vest during winter. I often wear polo shirts and jeans. Of course, with a matching belt.
