Fairly straightforward. WE (the Americans and Europeans) gave the Palestinians' country of Palestine to the Jewish people in 1947 via a UN resolution. Of course the Jewish people fought very hard to keep it since they were immediately attacked by angry Arab/Moslem countries whose people not not happy about this at all.
There was understandable international sympathy after the clear revelation of Nazi atrocities against Jewish people in Europe at the end of Worl War II.
The Jews in Palestine had been fighting for a return of their original (biblical) homeland in the early 1900s. They used terrorism against the British who had occupied Palestine after World War I.
I think the British realized there would be an ongoing problem in the Middle East if Palestine was allowed to become a Jewish homeland. No one had a better solution to the problem. The tragic part of the current problem is that the Jewish people and the Palestinians have never been able to work out their diffrences and live together. The land has become productive again with Jewish ingenuity and work.

Jews believe that Israel is their 'promised land' by God. However, Israel was conquered numerous times, most notably by the Romans, and the Jews eventually dispersed around the world.
By this time, Palestine has formed, inhabited by Palestinians, and the Middle East was under British or French rule. After WW2 & the Holocaust, the Jews petitioned the Brits for the creation of Israel, and the Brits came up with a plan to split Palestine into two halves - one Israeli (the bigger portion) & one Arab (Palestinian). The Arabs rejected this plan, but the Israelis went on to declare independence, kick out the Palestinians and take over the whole area, backed by American, British & other Western powers.
Ever since, the Palestinians have got the rawest deal imaginable, and nothing is done about it because of the constant funding & support Israel receives from America.

Basically the illegal immigrant jews from Europe formed terrorist gangs and attacked the British administration and the christian and muslim Palestinians after WW2.
Their biggest atrocity was the bombing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem in which over 90 innocent people were killed.
To stop the bloodshed the newly formed UN decided to split Palestine between the jews and the arabs. The arabs were not happy about this and rejected the plan.
When the British left in 1948 the jews attacked the christians and muslims and grabbed their land . Any Palestinians who tried to stay were killed.
The survivors live in refugee camps to this day.

>it's more like racial differences. like whites hate blacks and vise versa.
>they have been enemies since Old testaments days. they were fighting for territories then, they are still fighting for territories now.
>back then israelis despised the palestinians coz they (palestinians) are uncircumcised.
> Palestinians hate israelis maybe because in ancient battles, the israelis usually won miraculously. (like with david and goliath, samson). The palestinians, with all the wepons of war cannot bear the defeat.
> it's more like holding the grudges. until both sides forgive each other, there will be no peace.

As you wisely noted, it is hard to condense history into the space allotted in a Yahoo Answer. Here's a brief overview with links to a few sites:
Since the exile of the Jews from their land thousands of years ago, they maintained a dream of return to Zion/Jerusalem. (Jerusalem is mentioned in the Bible close to 700 times.) Since their exile, Jews pray toward the site of the Temple Mount three times a day, asking G-d to rebuild Jerusalem and the destroyed Holy Temple.
Throughout history, there was a small Jewish presence maintained in some areas of Israel. Over the years, many Jews from the exile also attempted to return despite the fact that living conditions were difficult.
During the 1880’s, there was the beginning of a mass immigration. The Jews who lived there were referred to as "Palestinians". As they started changing the landscape from malarial swamps and deserts to arable farm land, this attracted a large number of Arab migrant workers (fellahin) from neighboring countries (Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, etc.) who were looking for employment and better living conditions.
These itinerant Arab farmers mostly labored as serfs for overseas Arab landowners and considered the land that they worked to be part of southern Syria.
To this day, the origins of Arab settlers of various neighborhoods are well known within Israel. (For example, the Hebron Muslims mostly migrated from Syria. Other areas are populated by those from Iraq, Egypt, etc.)
The identity of these now local Arabs as "Palestinians" was a new concept that first arose in December 1920 for political reasons. After the Arab countries again attacked Israel in 1967 and lost the 6 - Day War, this idea gained popularity as another way to take over Israeli land.

Throughout the early 1900s, Arabs continued with a systematic effort to drive out the Jews from the area west of the Jordan River with continuous attacks on Jewish communities. (As the attacks were numerous and virtually ongoing at all times, I am including links to only a few of the more well known riots. )
For example, there were major riots by Arabs in 1920-1921, and 1929 (look up the Hebron Massacre of that year), as well as the infamous 1936-39 “Arab Revolt”. http://www.amichai.com/articles/arab_riots.html

"On May 14, 1948, the Palestinian Jews ... declared the . . . State of Israel . . . . On the next day, seven neighboring Arab armies... Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Yemen... invaded Israel. Most of the Arabs living within the boundaries of the newly declared . . . [state] were encouraged to leave by the invading Arab armies to facilitate the slaughter of the Jews and were promised ... all Jewish property after the victorious Arab armies won the war. The truth is that 70% of the Arab Palestinians who left in 1948 – perhaps 300,000 to 400,000 of them – never saw an Israeli soldier! . . . and the Arab Palestinians are still tortured by the residual shame of their flight . . . . " http://www.masada2000.org/historical.html
The attempts by some to spread disinformation notwithstanding, Israel did not become a state as a result of the Holocaust. On the contrary, events that occurred at the time of the Holocaust actually delayed Israeli independence!
