the hypotenuse is the longest side
adjacent means "next to". it is the side next to the angle that is not the hypotenuse
as the name suggests, opposite is the opposite side to the angle

It depends on which angle you are referring to. Take triangle ABC, let angle ABC be the right angle, A at the top, C at the bottom.
A
|\
| \
|_\
B C
Let's say you're looking at angle BAC then. The opposite would be the side that is not in contact with the angle at all, meaning not AB nor AC, so it's BC. You can look at it either from the diagram or looking at BAC, it's essentially angle A you're looking at, so the opposite is BC. The hypotenuse, as other answerers have explained, is AC - the slant. So the remaining side is AB - the adjacent.
Look at the other angle - angle ACB now.The opposite is AB, and the adjacent is BC.

Right Angle Triangle
| \ side c (Hypotenuse)
|_ \
|_|__\
|
\ / side b (adjacent)
Its very simple ,
Right angled triangle is triangle which has one of its angle as 90 degrees... now consider the above figure
The angle of 90 degree is formed between side 'a' and side 'b'
so the side opposite to the angle formed is the hypotenuse and for the side 'a' side 'b' is adjacent side and vice versa

Draw a right angled triangle right angled at C as follows:-
Horizontal = AC (b)
Vertical = BC (a)
Hypotenuse = AB (c)
Right angle at C
Angle___Opposite___Adjacent
A_______BC (a)_____AC (b)
B_______AC (b)_____BC (a)
From this triangle:-
c² = a² + b² (Pythagoras Theorem)

dude the hypotenuse is the longest line in front of the the right angle... its constant.
the adjacent line depends on what you refer is the point of origin.. its either of the two sides/line perpendicular to each other..
hope this helps..
