Fade, yes. Rust, no. You can avoid fading by taking it off before washing your hands/swimming/showering/whatever, basically avoiding getting soaps and chemicals on it and keeping it clean.

Being a jewelry aritst... I can answer this. Sterling Silver will tarnish over time. Copper tarnishes and turns green. Silver turns a dull grey to even black in different environments. What tarnishes silver? Air does. Go to walmart and get a silver polishing cloth for $3. There are also tarnish retardants on the market.
