Smart is a European manufacturer, right? So it makes sense that they would use the metric system. Here's a good rule of thumb: there are about 90 km in 55 miles.

The cars would comply with the design rules for new cars in the country of sale so in some countries they will need to be calibrated in miles.
If you live in a country that uses miles and you see a car calibrated in km, it was probably imported as a second hand car.

IT IS ILLEGAL TO HAVE ONLY KM ON YOUR SPEEDO IN THE UK
BUT i see the point to your question the speedo may record the the information in km but your dial as to be by law converted to miles or have dual signage. so in fact you are right the total distance travelled will be recorded in kilometres and I would think this is the case for all the cars

If it was in Kilometers it wouldn`t be a "Mileage" it would be a "Kilometerage"
