Of course. Semen samples are sometimes used to identify culprits in rape cases.

Yes it is. Sperm contain DNA. This can be extracted and profiled as can human DNA from any other source. It is the basis by which forensic samples (bloodsamples, mouth swabs bloodstains, seminal stains , saliva stains etc) are profiled and compared. In this context it is these profiles that are stored on the National DNA database. Profiling consists of examining the 'nature' of a persons DNA at between 11 to 15 different loci. Loci are unique places on the whole of the human DNA (known as the human genome). By examining the type or nature of the DNA at each of these loci you can then work out how frequently this combination of types occurs . Usually the frequencies are so low that it approaches individuality for all practical purposes. However blood relatives will have similar (but not identical) profiles and sometimes it is not always possible to obtain a full profile. DNA profiles can be obtained from very very small samples because the small amount of DNA present is first amplified by a process known as PCR. Your question underpins the very manner of how DNA profiling is used to investigate rape. Sperm DNA can be recovered from the victim's vagina, profiled and compared against the profile of any suspect or profiles stored on the National DNA database. A full profile match is indicates with a high degree of probaility that the semen originated from the person. Of course, it does not prove rape by itself. For example, if consent is the issue.

DNA can be obtained from sperm and this can lead to DNA profiling to identify someone. However.......if the sperm has dried up and has been lying around for...lets say a week, DNA can be hard to obtain and may not be possible to identify a person.

Hell yeah! due to the genetic material (DNA) that can be found in the sperm cell. It is possible to take a sample for DNA analysis, usually done in crime labs and find a match. Everybody contains unique DNA codes, kinda like a fingerprints. So, it's definitely possible.

-Lyse (break up) sperm cells using detergent
-Centrifuge to separate out DNA and purify using chromatography
-Use PCR machine to replicate DNA many times over
-Mix with a selection of restriction enzymes to break up DNA into fragments
-Run on an electrophoresis gel to get a "genetic fingerprint"
-Repeat with sample cells from individual (can be obtained with a cheek swab)
-Compare fingerprints

The restriction enzymes will cut the DNA at different places in different people as they have different base sequences. Everyone therefore has different sized fragments that are separated out in size order in a gel column by applying an electric field. The number and size of fragments will differ between individuals.

Sperm and everything else in your body have DNA, so yes it is possible. There's no hiding DNA and very few (if any) people know how to alter it.

Yes it is. Spems contains DNA and everyone's DNA is unique. so by applying the technique of DNA fingerprinting, and matching it with possible suspects, sperm can be matched to its donor. this is a technique used by forensic scientists...

Of course.. DNA will identify the donor..

Are you worried about this for a SPECIFIC reason???? lol

I think so. After I was sexually assaulted, they said I should've gone to the hospital right away.
It's called DNA but you need people (in my case, I knew the person so it would've been easy) to match it up with.

Very much so yes. Look at forensic scientists when trying to solve a rape.....its better than blood.
