The Battle of Waterloo effectively brought an end to the Napoleonic Wars which had raged over Europe for 25 years. It was fought by an alliance of British, Dutch and Prussian troops against Napoleon. He had escaped from Elba and got together a large army of loyal troops to try and regain his Empire. He was not successful as he lost the battle. He escaped back to Paris, hoping to regroup but effectively found France was against him and he eventually abdicated and was exiled to the island of St. Helena in the South Atlantic. The allied troops eventually took Paris and the Bourbon King, Louis XVIII was replaced on the throne. Europe was carved up by the winning powers in accordance with what had been under discussion, and more or less agreed, at the Congress of Vienna which had been under way since 1814. This eventually lead to battles for independence by parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the unsuccessful movement for unity in Italy and Germany. It also led to hatred between France and Prussia/Germany which was to exist for another 100 years.

For the details of the battle better to check wikipedia but in basics. The battle started out on the grounds of waterloo between the English (led by the duke of Wellington) and Duch on one side and the French on the other. The English and Dutch were outnumbered and if Napoleon had taken them head on chances were he might have won. he decided to wait for reinforcement. While for the other side also had German reinforcements on the way. At the end Napoleon actually thought that it were his reinforcements that had arrived. He didn't realise the extent of his mistake till it was too late. The end results were that Napoleon was empeached and banished to st helena. It also marked the redevision of the European map in the Vienna congress of 1815 The united Netherlands were created and Austria got parts of Hungary to compensate.
