My marraige certificate has X prakash (say my name) and X lakshmi (my wife name), x being my surname. Is it valid? or should marraige certificate should have her maiden name?

Now i am chaning her surname to my surname in passport.
My question is should the name on passport should be consistent with name on marraige certificate?

In the case of marriage certificate has maiden name, and in case of surname change both will differ..

so what is the right thing...i mean should the marraige certificate have her maiden name or my surname?

Any marriage certificate issued by any Marriage officer/registrar has the maiden name of the bride/wife, her surname as it was of her father's surname. This marriage certificate which is issued by the Marriage officer/registrar is a proof of marriage (mind you the Regional Passport Officer will ask for such marriage certificate for this purpose) on the basis of which you move the regional passport office from where it was issued for changing her name/surname & adding your name as the Spouse, for which a copy of your passport will be required along with the copy of the Marriage certificate. Its the choice of the woman, whether to have the husbands surname or not. it is tradition for a woman who comes into the husbands household as his wife to change her maiden name to the husbands surname.

The marriage certificate will have her name before marriage and after marriage. Your marriage certificate is proof of your marriage, your passport is not. Your wife has a choice on what name she wants to appear on her passport. It can be Lakshmi - Her maiden name - X your surname or simply Lakshmi X.

Marraige certificate should have her maiden name - it's function is to state which two people were joined in marriage. It's obvious that you'll have the same surname AFTER marriage. If you put it as hers on the certificate, it looks like two people from the same family married.

As for passport - it should reflect her CURRENT name.

Absolutely valid. Her maiden name should appear in the certificate. The certificate is just a proof you two are married to each other.
